| Absolute Oils The term absolute is used to describe materials which are obtained by means of enfleurage or solvent extraction. Enfleurage yields a 'pomade', a mixture of fats and essential oils. Solvent extraction produces a 'concrete', a mixture of fats, waxes, essential oils and other plant materials. The pomade and concrete is then treated with alcohol to produce an 'absolute'. These methods of extraction are used to extract the essence from flower petals where distillation would distort or destroy the delicate perfume.
Absolutes differ from essential oils in that they are usually thicker and more viscous. They are extremely strong in both scent and therapeutic properties and should be used in low concentrations.
